Lower School Curriculum
The Brookfield Academy Lower School provides an academic learning experience for young students, as well as attention to character
development appropriate to their tender years.
- English
At Brookfield Academy, reading is the core of the Lower School. Acquiring this skill,
which is a prerequisite for so much learning, receives a great deal of attention in the Academy's foundational division. All teachers
share literature with their students each day.
- History
History in the Lower School at Brookfield Academy covers a wide range of topics, affording a broad base for a more focused study later in the Middle and Upper Schools. There is a strong emphasis on the principles and values upon which our country was founded and which continue to contribute to our democratic freedom.
- Mathematics
Math is a core subject at Brookfield Academy, beginning with foundations in the Lower School, which are taught in an engaging, yet traditional, manner, using the Singapore math approach. The Lower School focuses on learning and mastering number sense, place value, computation, mental math strategies, and the eight steps to model drawing.
- Science
Earth science, physical science, and life science are explored at each level in the Lower School
curriculum. Our aim is to capitalize on the child's innate curiosity about the world.
- Fine Arts
Lower School music provides an opportunity for reading, creating, and performing music with a strong choral emphasis. The Kodaly system uses songs and games to introduce rhythmic and melodic tools for music literacy. The Lower School art program is designed to assist in the development of individual creativity while teaching the use of different media.
- Library and Technology
In the Lower School, students learn to appreciate literature, both fiction and non-fiction, in order to become life-long readers. Children participate in a variety of activities, introducing them to vocabulary, authors, and literature. Lower Schoolers are also exposed to technology, through meaningful computer software and skill-driven exercises which support the curriculum and student work in the classroom.
- Physical Education
Physical education in the Lower School aims at developing a lifelong interest and proficiency in
movement skills.
- Resource Center
The "Lincoln Room" is open to all students who need a little extra help with their classroom work. The Lincoln Room is an addition, not an alternative, to classroom instruction.
