Chorus Class

The emphasis at Brookfield Academy at the middle school level is to develop a broader appreciation of music by way of vocal music. Throughout the year, the classes will acquire a better understanding of the rudiments of music through singing. The students work on developing better singing voices and learn how to read music using the solfege system (Do-Re-Mi, etc.). The Middle School chorus class meets two to four times a week and is offered as a quarter credit elective

Concerts

During the first semester students apply these techniques to classic Christmas/Holiday music. In the past they have performed excerpts from Handel's Messiah, Bach's Oratorios and Cantatas, traditional/popular Christmas carols, and songs from around the world in English, Latin, French, German and Spanish. This repertoire makes up the program for the Christmas Holiday Concert in December. During second semester the focus turns to operatic music and musical theater.

Music Festival

The first two months of the second semester typically are devoted to preparing for a school music festival. All students are urged to participate. Brookfield Academy will hold its own solo and ensemble competition and concert, "BA Idol," open to all students Levels 4 - 12.

Musical Theater

Brookfield Academy also offers students the opportunity to perform in school musicals. The Middle School performances take place in the fall semester and the Upper School production takes place in the spring semester. A student wishing to audition for a lead role, which requires a considerable commitment of time outside of the school day, should watch for notices announcing those audition times

The Middle School musical is open to students in Levels 6 through 8. The Upper School musical is open to the entire student body, depending on the needs of the particular show being produced. For example, the productions of "The Sound of Music," "The King & I," "Fiddler on the Roof," and "My Fair Lady" utilized the talents of all three divisions at Brookfield Academy.

The rehearsals for the musicals take place after school. If a student wants to be a part of this music program, then his or her attendance at all rehearsals is required when approaching performances.
