McGowan to Play in State Tennis Tournament June 3
Brookfield Academy junior Matt McGowan was selected as a special qualifier for the WIAA Division 2 state individual tennis tournament. His first round match will be Thursday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the UW-Madison campus.

Matt had one of the big upsets of the weekend in last year’s state championships. After quickly disposing of his opening round foe from Wausau Newman, McGowan upset Cassian Utrie from Appleton Xavier (6-2, 6-2) to earn a berth in the quarterfinals. He then lost to eventual runner-up Aidan Korros of Kohler and moved into the consolation bracket, where he split his matches with a pair of University School opponents and finished in sixth place.

Poetry Contest Winners
Four Brookfield Academy students won top prizes in the Brookfield Public Library’s Young Adult Poety Contest. Freshman Mahalia Sobhani’s poem, "Real Life Math," won first place in the high school category. Justin Zhu, eighth grade, won first place for middle school students, and seventh graders Grace Deeoley and Jemma Kloss tied for second place in the contest.

Brookfield Academy students also scored very well in regional and state pronunciation contests, brining home 21 first-place medals in Spanish and eight in French.

The founders of the society modeled Cum Laude after Phi Beta Kappa and in the years since its founding, Cum Laude has grown to 381 chapters, approximately two dozen of which are located in public schools and the rest in independent schools. Membership is predominantly in the United States, but chapters also are located in Canada, England, France, Spain, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
